Best of the Best

This a fun list for us and we encourage you to chime in with things that maybe we haven’t tried yet. Most of these are close by, because we think that if there’s something good to see or do, why drive a long distance if you don’t have to. Join in on the fun and send us a note if you want to nominate a place for us to include!

Best Things to do for the Little ones

  1. Bass Lake (5 mins away)

Right in Blowing Rock. Great place to take a walk around the lake and find a spot along the wide gravel hiking trails to sit down and try your hand at catching a fish. About a mile around the entire lake.

    Directions: Bass Lake

  2. CHETOLA Bon Fires Fri/Sat (5 MINS Away)

Chetola Resort at Blowing Rock, an 87-acre resort within walking distance of the quaint mountain village of Blowing Rock and adjacent to a 3,600-acre National Park. Lots of activities and events. On Friday and Saturday nights, they host Bon Fires where you can buy S’mores to roast for the kiddos and purchase beverages for the adults. Sit around the fire on the Adirondack chairs and let the kids run around on the lawn.

  3. Silvervale Falls (10 mins away)

There are lots of waterfalls in the area, but one that is really easy to get to (best bang for your buck) where you can literally park your car next to the base of the falls is Sivervale Falls, just South of Blowing Rock. Others on the list are good too, but this one is great if little legs can’t make it down a long trail to see such beautiful sites.

  4. Gem Mining

There are plenty of places for the kids to find treasures while mining gems. You’ll find a few along 321 toward Boone and 105 toward Banner Elk from Boone. The closest one is Doc’s Rocks, located next to Mystery Hill, just five minutes from the cabin.

  5. (CLOSED FOR 2020) TWEETSIE RAILROAD (5 MINS)

Tweetsie Railroad is a family-oriented Wild West theme park located between Boone and Blowing Rock. The centerpiece of the park is a 3-mile ride on a train pulled by one of Tweetsie Railroad's two historic narrow-gauge steam locomotives.
